Reducing Antipsychotics

In May 2012, CMS launched a major initiative to curtail the inappropriate prescribing of antipsychotics for nursing home residents with dementia and set a goal to reduce this practice by 15% by December 31, 2012. CMS is already working toward an even more ambitious reduction by the end of 2013. This year’s goal for the campaign—the National Initiative to Improve Behavioral Health and Reduce the Use of Antipsychotic Medications in Nursing Home Residents—is to slash the use of antipsychotics among this population by 40%.
