While You Were Sleeping

In case you missed it while you were sleeping, the FDA has required that manufacturers of zolpidem-containing sleeping pills to lower their recommended doses. In a recent study, it was revealed that some patients exhibited high serum levels of zolpidem, which impairs their ability to perform activities that require alertness and can lead to falls and injuries. For extended-release products, the FDA recommended that doses be lowered from 12.5 mg to 6.25 mg. A similar reduction was recommended in immediate-release products, with a reduction from 10 mg to 5 mg. While these dose changes have only been required in women because they eliminate zolpidem at a slower rate than men, it is recommended that men receive the lower doses as well.
